An extravaganza of eclectic and exotic entertainment

Since 1982 Tropical Heatwave has been a rite of spring for fans of eclectic music. Once just a Cuban Club event, Tropical Heatwave now spreads all over Ybor City with an incredible lineup of diverse entertainment, more than 60 bands on thirteen stages. In its 31st year, Tropical Heatwave has become an event to bring all of Ybor City alive with great music and parties. For the first time we will have clubs on Ybor City's main drag, 7th Avenue, with two Stages in the Ritz and a stage in Bricks. Roosevelt 2.0 will be an all acoustic stage and there will be bands in Centennial Park. Music everywhere!

The Heatwave booking criteria has always been musical excellence, strong visual appeal, fun, and high energy. For many Heatwave aficionados the most fun is the magical experience of collectively discovering new artists who never have played before in this area. This year there are more artists to discover than ever before.

While some of the national bands may be on your radar, you should not forget to check out the great local and regional artists who will showcase at Heatwave. We have handpicked great bands who are ready to compete for audiences with the national bands. It's always thrilling for both local bands and their fans to rise to the occasion by turning in some of the hottest music of the Heatwave.

With thirteen stages of choice, everybody gets a unique experience by making their own strategy for seeing the best or the most music. What is the Picnic Island Adventure Run? It is a 3.6 mile off-road run that will have a number of great challenges that are designed to be fun and push your body to new limits.

What can this race be compared to? There is nothing like the Picnic Island Adventure Run in Tampa Bay. This race combines a beautiful park, a great sunset view over the water, music, and a challenging course unlike anything you have seen before. Top it all off with the best post-race party and a feast from a professional caterer!

Run the Race Series! Run all 3 races to compete in our Picnic Island Series. Trophies are for Overall Male and Female and Overall Masters Male and Female. The 9th Annual Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Races will be held at Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park, the Marriott Waterside and waters of Garrison Channel! Several teams from local corporate and community groups as well as paddlers from across the U.S. are competing to be Tampa's #1 Dragon Boat Team!

This is a race run with exact precision, and professional equipment by Pan American Dragon Boat Association. 450m on the waters of Garrison Channel, with a fully buoyed 5-lane course, where the waters are always calm and the sun always shines.

The event will kick off at 8:00 in the morning with the Opening Ceremonies on the Marriott Waterside patio, and the first race at 8:30am, with a heat running every 12 minutes. Each team will race 3 times throughout the day, being seeded into a division, and then getting the chance to become a Division Champion!

Race results will be posted online immediately as they become available to www.mobiledragon.info, sponsored by Tampa Bay Club Sport!!

Athletes and spectators will enjoy festivities in Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park throughout the entire event with Asia Fest. Asia Fest's entertainment and vendors in the Park will be open from 11 am - 3 pm. Additional food vendors will be available until 7 pm.

A Breast Cancer Ceremony will be held at 10:30 am where we celebrate the lives of men and women who have lost their battle to cancer over the years with a traditional pink carnation ceremony.

Second annual music festival presented by Sound Czech Studios, at Market on 7th in Ybor City. This festival will highlight some of the Bay Area's best musicians in a family friendly venue. Scheduled to appear: Yoshi Gish, Virginia Rose Band, E-Z and The Man, and making their return to the stage is Shallow Mindz highlighting songs from their debut CD "The 8th Day" and new material on their upcoming CD "Reflection".

Tampa, FL (3/8/12) - Tickets are now available for purchase for the Seventh Annual Taste of South Tampa, sponsored by the South Tampa Chamber of Commerce. The event will take place Sunday, April 15, 2012 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Hyde Park Village. Like past year's events, attendees should expect a day full of delicious food and live entertainment in the beautiful setting of Hyde Park Village.

Unlike other tasting events that charge per taste, the Taste of South Tampa offers its attendees all-inclusive food and beverage with their admission. Attendees will get the opportunity to sample menu items from an assortment of South Tampa restaurants. Water and soft drinks will be available, as well as beer provided by Heinken and wine provided by Barefoot Wine and Bubbly for those of drinking age with proper identification. With advance purchase, regular admission tickets are $35 per person, or $20 for ages 11 to 20. Kids 10 and under receive free admission. On the day of the event, ticket prices increase $5, pending availability.

This year, we are proud to introduce some exciting additions to the event including chance drawing ticket sales for a variety of prizes including a chauffeured night on the town in a Bentley and furniture items from Ashley Furniture. A voting system will also be in place for one lucky restaurant to be awarded the title of "Best of the Taste of South Tampa."

We are also really excited to bring back our air-conditioned VIP Lounge this year! For a third year in a row, our team has revamped the VIP area so those who choose to upgrade can "taste" in style and comfort. For an additional $15, VIP attendees will be able to enjoy wine and champagne provided by Barefoot Wine and Bubbly and other VIP only benefits. As in prior years, VIP tickets are limited and are expected to sell-out far in advance of the event.

Additional sponsors such as Tampa Bay Times make this event possible; which has in past years raised over $25,000 for local charities. It's the inaugural year for this music fest, which joins the Gasparilla art and film festivals that take place in the bay area in the spring. The lineup so far includes: alt-country act Deer Tick (pictured), blues-funk groups the Lee Boys and Rebirth Brass Band, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Alvin Youngblood Hart, as well as jazz-pop singer Kaleigh Baker (formerly of Orlando) and popular Bradenton group Have Gun, Will Travel.

Some recent additions: Ra Ra Riot, the indie-chamber-pop group out of Syracuse, N.Y.; Miami Latin/jazz/electronic/fusion act Spam Allstars, who are familiar faces at Crowbar; and funk/soul singer Lee Fields.

The festival will also feature an Interactive Kids Sound Sculpture Garden, located at Kiley Gardens between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The garden will feature a percussion section, drummers and dancers courtesy of Kuumba Dancers & Drummers, abstract wire sculptures courtesy of the Tampa Museum of Art, and face painting, balloon animals and games courtesy of Tampa Creative Camps.

This weekend, the UFC will return to Australia, where the organization will introduce its flyweight division in the form of a four-man tournament for the 125-pound title.

In the tournament's semifinals, former bantamweight title contenders Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson will make their respective flyweight debuts against Yasuhiro Urushitani and Ian McCall.

Japanese Shooto champion Urushitani and Tachi Palace Fights champion McCall vacated their titles for a chance to compete inside the UFC's Octagon for the first time in their careers.

Meanwhile, the main event will feature welterweights Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann, who will each be looking for a second straight win in their chase for a shot at the 170-pound title.

To promote the upcoming event, which will be held at the Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia, the UFC will hold a prefight press conference on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.

One of the highlights of the fair is the daily jousting match, usually held multiple times throughout the day, in which opposing sides of the field are allied with different jousting opponents. Each side cheers as their knight in full armor attempts to knock the other from his horse.

The Zoo School is offering Parent's Night Out professional child care service from 6-10:30 p.m. February 10 and from 5-10:30 p.m. February 11 for children ages 3-12 (younger children must be toilet trained) at the Zoo School. Price is $30 for the first child and $10 each additional sibling. Zoo School will supply the entertainment, pizza, drinks and peace of mind so parents can enjoy the evening out. The child care service is designed to accommodate parents attending Wild at Heart, but it is not a requirement for parents to stay at the Zoo.

Every February during the Florida State Fair, Cracker Country opens its gates to the Fair's guests! Take a stroll back in time and relax as you experience the sights, sounds, and smells of Florida's history. Explore the museum grounds and interact with costumed interpreters to take part in the customs of the past! Take home a newspaper printed on an antique printing press right before your eyes, and try a taste of real sugar cane before watching its juice being boiled into syrup! Visit the post office and have a letter mailed with a special Cracker Country cancellation! Visit crafters and trade demonstrators throughout the museum grounds, see how tools were used in the early 1900s, and discover the art of spinning, woodcarving, blacksmithing, and making cow whips in the time of Florida's pioneers! End the afternoon with a bag of fresh kettle corn, smoky beef jerky, and a refreshing cup of lemonade as you enjoy traditional country music under a canopy of oak trees. Make sure to stop by the Cracker Country General Store to take home an old-fashioned souvenir!

Thousands line the downtown waterfront to watch the spectacle as fully-rigged pirate ship Jose Gasparilla sails into the south end of Hillsborough Bay with hundreds of pirates aboard, cannons booming and a massive flotilla of pleasure boats accompanying it. The ship docks at the Tampa Convention Center around 1 p.m., where the mayor will surrender the key to the city into the hands of the captain of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla.

After their invasion aboard the Jose Gasparilla, hundreds of pirates get down to the serious business of the day: Tossing thousands of beads to hundreds of thousands who line the streets along Tampa's waterfront. This parade brings more than 140 units, including 90 floats, marching bands and 50 pirate krewes. It begins at Bay to Bay Boulevard and follows Bayshore Boulevard to Brorein Street, turns east on Brorein, then north on Ashley Drive and ends at Cass Street.

Following the parade, the pirate fest continues with a variety of live entertainment on stages throughout downtown Tampa. The newly redesigned and expanded Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, located on the east side of the Hillsborough River across from the University of Tampa between Madison and Polk, will host the main Gasparilla entertainment stage.

A Latin-themed entertainment stage is located downtown before the parade in MacDill Park, on the west side of Ashley Drive along the river between Whiting and Jackson Streets.

Tips for navigating the day

PARKING
Private lots throughout downtown Tampa will be open during Gasparilla, with varying rates. The public parking garages at the Tampa Convention Center, under the Crosstown between Florida Avenue and Morgan Street, under the Crosstown east of Morgan Street, on Channelside Drive between Florida Avenue and Morgan Street, Fort Brooke and Whiting Street all charge $10. But the best option, on our experience is to park far away and hop on board the TECO Line Streetcar ($5 for an unlimited pass) in Ybor City and ride it into downtown Tampa. Park your car at the Centro Ybor Parking Garage or the Palm Avenue Garage. It's $1 for the first three hours; up to $10 depending on how long it's there. RESTROOMS
There are portable toilets along the parade route, near reserved parade seating and at the downtown street festival, but plan ahead because lines typically will be long. Publix, 243 Bayshore Blvd., offers its restrooms to the public. Hyde Park Village has public restrooms on the west side of Snow Avenue, as does Kate Jackson Park at Rome and Snow avenues. Facilities at restaurants and bars near the festivities are for paying customers only. Depending on the lines elsewhere, you might find it's worth the cost of a cover charge.

DRINKS
Do not walk around with your red cup of beer. Police in recent years have gotten much tougher and issue hundreds of open container citations on Gasparilla day. Look for signs about the permitted areas, but the basic rule is if you are at the parade route, you can have an open container. If you are in the neighborhoods, you cannot.

MONEY
Bring cash because many of the ATMs set up along the parade route charge steep fees, and most vendors only take cash.

BEADS
Despite its rowdy reputation, "flashing" for beads is frowned upon. There are kids here, people. But here's a tip we learned from recent years: The crowds on the last segment of the parade downtown are often half the size of those on Bayshore Boulevard, so it ups your chances of catching more beads.

DESIGNATED DRIVER
Have one for your car or your boat because police are all over, on land and sea, looking for impaired drivers.

PROHIBITED
No large coolers or kegs. Open containers are allowed in designated areas only. Absolutely no glass bottles. You can have soft-sided coolers or lunch bags for children or medical needs.

REMEMBER WHERE YOU PARKED
Text yourself where you left your car. Police complain that they are hounded for directions by lost revelers.

RESERVE A SEAT
If you don't want to worry about finding a place to see the parade, you can reserve a bleacher seat or get a hospitality ticket. They range in price from $29.91 to $92.52 at gasparillatreasures.com.

Our NightOut site focus' on Dining, Bars, Entertainment, Bands and Accommodations. The site has a "live" calendar that is updated by the businesses themselves with fresh information about their specials and events. We are not just advertising as we then PROMOTE these businesses through Social Media on Facebook and Twitter, Newsletters, Networking, Sponsoring Events, Contests and more.
